Indigenous History
The area now known as Hunters Hill was traditionally owned by the Wallumedegal clan of the Darug people. The local Aboriginals lived off the land and waterways for thousands of years before European settlers arrived.
Early European Settlement
The first European to explore the shores of Hunters Hill was Captain John Hunter in 1788, who named the peninsula after himself. Hunter returned to the area in 1790 to establish a farm and built a cottage on the peninsula. Hunter's Hill remained a sparsely populated rural area until the mid-19th century when land grants were given to government officials and wealthy merchants.
Growth and Development
Throughout the 19th century, Hunters Hill grew into a prosperous suburb due to the construction of the Gladesville Bridge and the Parramatta River ferry service. Many large homes were built along the riverfront, including the iconic Villa Maria, which was constructed in the 1850s for the Italian consul-general to Sydney. Hunters Hill also became a centre for industry with the establishment of a tramway and steam-driven brickworks.

The suburb is home to Australia's first garden suburb, the Garden Suburb Estate, which was designed by architect John Horbury Hunt in the early 20th century. Additionally, Hunters Hill is home to St. Joseph's College, which was founded in 1881 and is one of the oldest independent Catholic schools in the country.
